Synopsis

She is mid-word, brow up, a pale cardigan, the tally still in her mouth. He is already smiling, a mark on the neck, the dark jacket comfortable with the interruption.

Between them two figures burn gold. One holds a staff and a long dress. The other has a hand up and the dress gone. The list changed while she was on a number.

You talk in circles. She could be saying it. He could be earning it. The glowing pair is the proof either way.

Extended sequence

Those two gold bodies are not a couple having a moment. They are versions. She is speaking to a man who has already swapped one for the other.

His smile is not agreement. It is pace. He is done with the sentence she is still building.

Figures in the frame

Virgo, hair back, the face of a person whose inventory moved. Gemini, the nick on the neck, the refusal to hold still for a count.

The gold pair sits where a chart would sit, if a chart could mock you.

Codex fragment

The later cut is a bed, a laugh, and no second face. This one still has both of them, and the moment the tally becomes a lie.

Circles are what a count looks like when the other person is allowed to revise it out loud.

Sound of Imagination

A voice that does not get to finish. Cloth. The thin hum a glowing thing would have if the room were honest. Sound of Imagination.

He does not answer louder. The smile is the reply, and smiles are quiet.

The Craft

Still: the tally still in her mouth, his smile already finished. Motion: the second gold figure, hand already up. Residual: the staff, which belonged to the earlier version. The Craft.

She was counting a person who had left the drawing.

Showcase

Keep the two gold figures, not the portraits. Showcase.

The portraits are any argument. The object is the revision, glowing, where a stable sign should have been.

She counted. He had already changed the list. Calling it circles is politer than calling it theft.

A staff, a raised hand, and a smile that will not wait for the total.
