On Duty
Key art
Synopsis
Papers, a black stamp standing between their hands, a table that has lived outside. She wears the dark military coat, gold at the collar, both hands on the stamp. He wears the longer coat and puts one finger on the page he expects to clear.
He came to pass. She did not come to be his gate. The stamp stays upright.
Wire and a pale hill behind them. Official, and not indoors, which is its own insult.
Extended sequence
His finger stays on the page. Her hands stay on the handle. The ink on the left-hand sheet is old. This sheet does not get a mark.
Two Leos in the same cut of uniform can still refuse each other. The argument is whose hand owns the weight.
Figures in the frame
Her hair escaping, a small smile that is not permission. His profile, the expectation, the coat that thinks it outranks a table.
The stamp is the only object with a job. It does not do the job.
Codex fragment
A stamp is a moral object only if you are sentimental. Here it is a tool she will not drop.
Waving a man through is administration. She declines the administration and keeps the posture of someone still at work.
Sound of Imagination
Paper under a fingertip. Wood. A dry wind in the wire. Sound of Imagination.
The stamp does not strike. That missing hit is the loudest thing on the table.
The Craft
Still: two hands and a stamp that has not fallen. Motion: his finger claiming the page. Residual: an old ink mark on a different sheet. The Craft.
Duty, in this light, is a refusal to make the sound he walked here for.
Showcase
Keep the stamp, not the fence. Showcase.
The wire is any border. The object is the weight she has not released.
