Synopsis
Ellis Rowan
The chair is for someone who does not sit. Its upholstery is worn in the shape of other hours and empty of a body now. A recording machine and a stack of tapes occupy the side table.
One tape has no label. He speaks the date, the hour, and a question into the quiet, then leaves a pause the length of an answer. The absent do not become a trick of hiding.
The door stays as it was. The chair stays lit and empty. Dust in the lamp beam does not thicken into a shape.
Extended sequence
What is refused

The appointed minute passes on a plain clock. The second hand is audible in the pause and then only ordinary. Ellis checks the doorway, finds it empty, and does not take the chair himself to supply a body. He starts the machine.
A counter advances through the space where an answer would have been, and the room does not give one. The lie, if a later listener finds one, will belong to the machine's confident turning, not to a person who never arrived. He watches the counter and not the chair.

Ellis Rowan
The upholstery does not dent. He leaves the question sheet face up and unsigned. The question is still the one he spoke. He does not add a confession of his own to finish the hour.
His pen stays capped. The lamp stays on the upholstery. The tapes stay ready and mostly unused.
Codex fragment
Fragment
The doorway keeps its empty dark. The tape keeps turning for no one who sat, counter still advancing, question sheet still unsigned, and the pause he left does not get filled by a voice the machine can pretend it caught. Ellis does not rewind the reel to hear the quiet he already knows. The counter keeps its climb.
The scenario is filed in the Codex.
Sound of Imagination
Live tape
The unlabeled tape in the stack stays unlabeled. He straightens the question sheet with two fingers and leaves it face up. The chair's worn upholstery, lit and empty, does not acquire a new dent. A pipe in the wall knocks once and does not knock again.
Showcase
Object

One reel takes the silence and calls it, by its motion, an interview. A loose end of tape ticks against the reel once each turn and does not snag.
The lamp remains on the empty chair. Heat from the bulb warms the near arm of the chair and does not warm a sitter. Ellis keeps his own seat.

He does not lean into the pause to repeat the question. Repeating it would only make a second silence.
The lamp filament holds its brightness. The doorway holds its dark.

The next room
After this filing
The machine turns as if an answer were a thing that could be stored by motion alone, and Ellis lets it turn without becoming the person who was supposed to sit. The next room is Footage of Nothing.
