One line
Before the synopsis
He turns them and each one is the same unused paper, no ghost of a heading, no pinprick where a staple was.
Synopsis
Anton Reeve
A stamp and a pad wait at his elbow. The pad is inked and even. Quiet hours have been passing in the corridor, and they are his to enter because they passed, and because the book is still the work.
A bell on the wall is unrung. Its clapper hangs straight.
No arrival stands at the counter. The corridor beyond the desk is empty and lit. He looks for a founding line, something the zero could hang from.
Extended sequence
What is refused

There is no first incident, no origin story sitting in a drawer, no previous operator's mark. Numbering will not invent one, but he writes the number anyway, as the job requires: 000.
The zeros sit at the top of the page like a beginning that knows it is only a count. The ink is dark and new. He stamps the hour beside them.

Anton Reeve
The stamp lands square. Under the number he enters the quiet: corridor empty, bell unrung, no arrival.
He does not add a myth about why the book starts here. The pen stops at the end of that line. The ink dries from the zeros outward.
Codex fragment
Fragment
The stamp pad shows a drier oval where the stamp drank, a small wound in the ink that will fill itself without his help. He leaves the pad open. He leaves the pen where the line ended, cap on, point clean, and he does not open a drawer to look for an older book.
The scenario is filed in the Codex.
Sound of Imagination
Live tape
He leaves the prior pages blank so anyone opening the book will meet nothing, and then zero. Time passes as the stamp ink sinks duller than the pen line, the hour mark becoming the quieter of the two. A page corner lifts in a draft from the corridor and settles.
Showcase
Object

The corridor light under the door does not change to suggest a visitor. Anton blots the line with a clean corner of paper and the blot takes almost nothing, the ink already seated.
He looks once at the blank pages ahead of zero, the future of the book as empty as its past, and does not start 001. The job tonight was the quiet, and the quiet has been entered.

He does not write the draft. The bell's clapper, which had hung straight, ticks once against the bowl without ringing, a soft contact that is not an arrival, and he does not add a second line for it.
The line marked 000 holds an hour.

The next room
After this filing
The page above it holds nothing at all, and the unrung bell keeps its one small tick as a sound the book has declined. The next room is Day the City Forgot.
