Codex fragment

The Codex sentence for Kael “Crowbar” Voss is the one the camera would not hold: Kael “Crowbar” Voss is held as a room, not a post. What the room already knew stays filed with the title, not with the feed.

Role

What he does in the city

Kael is an Independent Memory Tracer — one of the last people still willing to recover lost, stolen, or buried memories in New Cascadia. He is not a hero of the Stack. He is the man you hire when the corporations have already decided someone should not have existed.

Background

Before the chemical rain

Former corporate mnemo-investigator. He was dismissed after refusing to erase a child’s memories. The refusal cost him the clean floors of The Crown and left him on the forty-seventh floor of a rusting block where the elevator works only on even days. The work that remains pays little, attracts worse trouble, and keeps him talking — mostly at himself.

Appearance

What the eye keeps

About thirty-eight; the city has made him look closer to fifty. Short for the stories told about him — roughly 168 cm — with a crooked spine and a heavy old military cybernetic leg that aches and clicks when he walks. The left eye is a cheap corporate implant that forces advertisements into his peripheral vision, even in gunfights, even over corpses. He smokes synthetic cigarettes almost no one manufactures anymore. Coat worn thin by rain. Hands that still know how to open a locked memory case.

Character

How he holds the line

Fast speech. Sharp edges. Black humor aimed first at himself. He jokes while the city dissolves people — not for comfort, but to stay upright in chemical rain. He does not trust clean rooms. He trusts pressure, debt, and the rare client who still wants the truth more than a tidy erasure.
