The Carrier
Key art

From the frame
The Searcher has done the work for twenty years. He is in his forties. His left eye is a war implant, built to withstand anything and forgive nothing. It is the only honest instrument in the file. It said the carrier was foreign, then that it was full, then that there was room for one.
He knows how the dead are turned. That is why a skull facing rock is already a verdict before he touches the coin. He does not remember deciding to take it. The dossier does not invent the decision for him.
Three, and no more
The Surgeon is eighty. The hands tremble. The eyes do not. He is the first explanation the Searcher believes: the coin may devour a person and leave behind something that remembers the face. He has already tried the furnace. The coin came back whole.
The Keeper washes the unnamed dead. She keeps buttons, teeth, and thread in formalin. She is the only one who does not want to take. The client has a word for a place he will not name. The coin is not a person and is not money. The quarry night stays in the story. This file does not open it.
Filed as figures
No childhoods. No redeeming remark. The implant is a tool, not a personality. The skull is a sentence, not a character who gets a speech at the end.
