Prologue

Six seconds · the absent hour

An hour is absent. Gold lamp. Rain on the glass. Time is the weather. Mystery Noir does not fill the gap with speech.

The missing hour arrives as a black gap. He returns with wet shoes and no memory. Solving it is not the same as leaving the street clean.

Synopsis

Mystery Noir · Standalone

Between one and two in the morning the clock declines to have been there. The office keeps its lamp, its rain, its ordinary furniture. Only the hour is absent, and it is absent the way a tooth is absent: the tongue will not stop finding the gap. He goes out. The city does not record the going. He comes back with wet shoes and a courtesy memory of everything except the stretch that matters.

On the desk the book has already been bound with the title of the gap. The papers say no entry, and they say silence, and they say it more than once, which is how an office tells itself a fact has been handled. A red envelope with the climate’s name on it holds nothing you would call a lead. Leads are for cases that intend to close.

Mystery noir, in this room, is not a gift for the person who notices the clock first. Noticing is the easy part. The hard part is that the prints on the floor match him, and the hour still will not take his name.

Extended sequence

After the cut

After the last shot the hands are still travelling across a face that has lost its numeral. Nobody rewinds them. An extra minute, if you stay, is only the sound of water finding the low place in the boards, and the small tick of a clock that has been embarrassed and will not admit it.

He sits. He does not narrate the missing hour into existence. Narration would be a second file, and the first one already failed. The shoes dry. The prints do not. That is as much ending as the room is willing to stage.

A wet desk, a red book for the absent hour, a clock with a hole in its face, and footprints in the rainwater

The still is the proof the last shot would not caption: a bitten clock, a book already bound for the gap, prints that fit him.

A gold frame holding a rainlit desk and a clock with a piece of its face gone

Framed, the clock keeps the missing piece and loses the shoes. The film kept the shoes.

Figures in the frame

Who remains

One man, never named, because a name would pretend the hour had a witness. The lamp. The clock. The city in the window, which is populated and useless. Footprints that agree with him and a memory that does not.

If you want a second person, the film will not supply one. The absence is the company. A dossier would start from the hole in the clock face, not from a timesheet, and it would end when the timesheet tried to be helpful.

Codex fragment

Filed with the room

The sentence the camera would not hold: the hour had been spent, just not here. Spent is a kinder word than lost. Lost can be searched. Spent is already gone into a purchase you did not see.

The written scrap lives with the Fragments. It does not solve the clock. It only refuses the comfort of “he must have been somewhere.”

Residual

Rain on glass, a tick with a limp, the small suck of a wet shoe on wood. No theme that tells you the detective is thinking. Thinking, here, would be scored as furniture.

A residual belongs to Sound of Imagination when it is ready. Nothing from this hour has been filed there yet. The tick is still in the room.

The Craft

Image · motion · sound

The key still of the room stays the key. The new desk — book, bitten clock, prints — is the minute the lamp was low enough to read the title. Motion, when the film is cut, should be almost nothing: rain, a hand, the shoes. Sound is the limp tick.

Notes toward that cut live with The Craft. They do not replace the picture of the wet floor.

Filed in The Houses

Darkness & Psyche · Mystery Noir

Case of the Absent Hour is filed under Darkness & Psyche in Mystery Noir. It does not continue into the ledger, the lie, the file, the badge, or the board. They share a lamp. They do not share a plot.

The screening is held until the film is cut. The room is not held. The hour is already missing.
