The Story

The house had a language before it had a door that anyone would claim.

On the first night the plaster was still wet in the inner room. No one had yet asked the timber for a name. The wind that came through the unfinished lintel did not count as speech. Speech would come later, when the walls had learned which silences were load-bearing.

He slept with his palm on the new lime. In the hour before dawn the wall returned a temperature that was not his. Not a ghost. Not a warning. A rehearsal. The house practising the sentence it would spend the rest of its life refusing to finish.

By morning the workmen would arrive and call it settling. They would hang a door that closed as if it had always known how. They would not hear what he had heard: the first attempt at a word, too early for mythology, too late for stone to remain innocent.

He left before they came. He took no souvenir. The house kept the rehearsal. Years later travellers would say the rooms remembered. They would be almost right. The rooms had spoken once, before they agreed to be architecture, and they had not forgiven the agreement.
