The Story

They left the splice on the table as if it were a knife that had already done its work.

The editor had a name the studio no longer used. In the booth the timeline showed a gap that was not empty: a frame had been taken out, and the two remaining edges refused to admit they had ever been neighbours. On the monitor the city continued. In the gap, something kept the shape of a mouth.

She did not look for the missing second. She looked for the person who had been inside it. Down in the stacks the rain still hit the same three letters of a sign. The same chair waited at the same angle. The same unpaid hour sat in a glass that had not been washed because washing would have been a kind of witness.

After the cut, the room did not reset. Dust took the place of the take. Breath took the place of the line. The decision that did not make the poster stayed in the booth, too heavy for the feed, too exact for the street. She filed it under the title, not under the night.

Anyone who came later would see a clean join. Anyone who had been in the booth would know that cleanliness is only the name we give to a wound that has been taught to close without speaking.
